1. Roasted Garlic Mashed Potatoes:
These creamy and flavorful mashed potatoes are the perfect accompaniment to any roast or steak. Just boil some peeled and cubed potatoes until tender, then mash them with butter, milk, roasted garlic, salt, and pepper. You can also add some cheese or herbs for extra richness.
This classic soup is warming and satisfying, especially on a cold day. All you need is some butter, leeks, potatoes, chicken broth, cream, salt, and pepper. Cook the leeks in butter until soft, then add the potatoes and broth and simmer until the potatoes are cooked. Blend the soup until smooth, then stir in the cream and season to taste.
This is a great dish for picnics, potlucks, or barbecues. There are many variations of potato salad, but I like to use red potatoes, mayonnaise, mustard, celery, onion, pickle relish, hard-boiled eggs, salt, and pepper. Cut the potatoes into bite-sized pieces and boil them until fork-tender, then drain and cool slightly. In a large bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise, mustard, salt and pepper. Add the celery, onion, pickle relish, and eggs and toss to combine. Gently fold in the potatoes and refrigerate until ready to serve.
4. Hasselback Potatoes:
These are crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, with a beautiful fan shape. To make them, you'll need some medium-sized potatoes, butter, olive oil, salt, pepper, and your choice of herbs or cheese. Preheat the oven to 425°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Cut thin slices into each potato, leaving the bottom intact. Place the potatoes on the prepared baking sheet and brush them with melted butter and olive oil. Sprinkle with salt, pepper, and herbs or cheese if desired. Bake for 45 minutes or until golden and crisp.
5. Potato Wedges:
These are simple and satisfying snacks that you can make in no time. Just cut some russet potatoes into wedges and toss them with some oil, salt, pepper, and paprika. Spread them on a baking sheet in a single layer and bake for 25 minutes at 425°F, flipping halfway through. Serve with your favorite dipping sauce or enjoy them plain.
6. Potato Gratin:
This is a decadent and cheesy dish that is perfect for special occasions or holidays. You'll need some thinly sliced potatoes, heavy cream, garlic, nutmeg, salt, pepper, and grated cheese (I like to use Gruyere or Parmesan). In a small saucepan over medium heat, bring the cream, garlic, nutmeg, salt, and pepper to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 10 minutes. Layer half of the potatoes in a greased baking dish and pour half of the cream mixture over them. Sprinkle half of the cheese on top. Repeat with the remaining potatoes, cream, and cheese. Bake for 45 minutes at 375°F or until bubbly and golden.
These are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, with a savory flavor that goes well with sour cream or applesauce. To make them, you'll need some grated potatoes, onion, egg, flour, salt, pepper, and oil. Squeeze out as much moisture as you can from the potatoes and onion and transfer them to a large bowl. Add the egg, flour, salt, and pepper and mix well. Heat some oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat and drop heaping tablespoons of the batter into the pan. Flatten them slightly and cook for about 4 minutes per side or until golden and crisp. Drain on paper towels and serve hot.
8. Baked Potato:
This is a classic and easy way to enjoy a potato with endless topping possibilities. Just wash and dry some russet potatoes and prick them with a fork several times. Rub them with some oil and salt and place them on a baking sheet. Bake for an hour at 375°F or until soft when pierced with a knife. Cut open and fluff with a fork. Top with butter, sour cream, cheese, bacon, chives, or whatever you like.
9. Potato Skins:
These are fun and tasty appetizers that you can customize with your favorite fillings. To make them, you'll need some small potatoes, oil, salt, pepper, and cheese. Cut the potatoes in half and scoop out some of the flesh, leaving a thin layer attached to the skin. Brush the skins with oil and season with salt and pepper. Bake for 15 minutes at 425°F or until crisp. Sprinkle cheese on top and bake for another 5 minutes or until melted. You can also add some bacon, green onions, salsa, or sour cream if you like.
10. Potato Chips:
These are crunchy and addictive snacks that you can make at home with just a few ingredients. You'll need some thinly sliced potatoes, oil, salt, and vinegar (optional). Rinse the potato slices and pat them dry with paper towels. Heat some oil in a large pot over medium-high heat and fry the potato slices in batches for about 3 minutes per batch or until golden and crisp. Drain on paper towels and sprinkle with salt and vinegar if desired. Enjoy them while they're hot or store them in an airtight container for later.
